Saturday 13th October, Thomson Park, Signature Signs Cup:
A cup game against the League leaders from the division above you is a hard enough fixture but with a number of players missing credit to both sets of players for making this an entertaining game on what was a miserable wet day in Dundee. Scone once again proved that they are capable of playing good football and carrying out the managers mantra of passing the ball and building from the back. Scone started brightly and Aaron Carlon & Calum Kinnear were looking lively up front and as early as the 11th minute Kinnear was unlucky to see his long range effort hit the post in the opening exchanges. The opening goal came 5 minutes later when a long range effort from Grant Lawson was deflected to send Josh Gorton the wrong way to give the hosts the lead. Lochee United doubled their lead 7 minutes later when Connor Birse scored his first goal of the afternoon after good work from Kirk. Aaron Carlon continued to look dangerous and had a couple of chances as did Darren Gray & Kevin Sinclair but the hosts took their lead into the break.
Half time score: Lochee United 2-0 Scone
The hosts showed no signs of letting up as the 2nd half started & Scone showed no signs of giving up either as they pushed back with 2 quick corners in the opening minutes. Just as quickly chances fell the other end only for the efforts to clear the cross bar. Scone made the first change of the afternoon with Darren Spence replacing Calum Kinnear on 69 minutes. The hosts were looking dangerous from corners and on 73 minutes Gary Kenneth scored next with a header from a Reid corner. On 79 minutes Scott McComiskie got on the end of a McNally cross before 2 minutes later Birse scored his 2nd of the afternoon from another Reid corner kick to wrap up the afternoon for the hosts. Sean Whitworth came on for Gary Mackie for the closing minutes as he returned from injury. In summary Lochee United were deserved winners and the scoreline perhaps flatters them a bit as for a vast majority of this match Scone were able to compete and but for a 10 minute spell in each half the scoreline could’ve been a lot closer.
Full time score: Lochee United 5-0 Scone
Man of the match for Scone: Aaron Carlon (sponsored by Perth City Decorating Company) who with every game looks more & more comfortable at this level and his pace & movement continues to give the opposition something to think about. After the match, manager Derek Lawson (sponsored by Lindsays Butcher & Ronnie McNeill – Painter/Tiler) told Jaggies News “I thought it was a very good game of football. We did well in spells but never took our chances where Lochee United did. Overall, I am happy enough with our play and in particular the performance of Aaron Carlon who at 16 years old was fantastic to watch. I am disappointed in the goals that we lost but I wish Lochee Utd all the best of luck in the next round“. Next up for Scone, it’s back to League action and an away trip to Arbroath Vics for a 2:30pm kick off. With no League games played yesterday there is no change to the Premier League North table which is available here.
