Saturday 26th January:
Saturday saw Scone welcome Blairgowrie to Farquharson Park for the McBookie.com Premier league North in what despite the wet weather was an exciting game to watch. Over the last couple of months, Scone have quietly strung an impressive run together and despite injuries & suspensions continued their good form against another difficult opponent. Scone looked determined from the kick off with Ross Mitchell shooting just wide and Arran McKay heading just over the crossbar in the opening minutes. The opening goal came on 16 minutes, a Ross Wilson free kick was cleared out for a corner kick which was duly taken by Darren Gray and Stephen Moon (sponsored by Mark Berwick Motors) was on hand at the back post to head Scone into the lead. Scone continued to take the game to the visitors and 5 minutes later the Jaggies doubled their lead. A Kevin Sinclair effort was blocked & fell to Darren Gray on the edge of the area who’s long range effort left Gordon O’Brien little chance as he scored his first goal of the afternoon. Aaron Carlon nearly added to his tally on 24 & 39 minutes forcing O’Brien into making the saves. With Blairgowrie creating little in terms of clear cut chances, the hosts looked comfortable going into the break.
Half times score: Scone 2-0 Blairgowrie
Blairgowrie manager Mark Brash will have been looking for a reaction from his side and Blair did create the first couple of chances in the second half but Scone were not finished yet as they looked for that 3rd goal and inescapable lead. On 52 minutes a Craig Mitchell effort was blocked but fell to Darren Gray who calmly beat the keeper & defence to score his 12th goal of the season. The visitors made the first substitution of the afternoon & on 73 minutes Sean Whitworth came on for Ross Mitchell before Calum Black came on for Aaron Carlon as Scone looked to see out the game. Blairgowrie were not done though and 2 goals in 7 minutes made for a nervy finish for the hosts. Gary Axworthy scored on 75 minutes before Matthew Adam got another one back on 82 minutes. Scone were worthy winners on the day and would’ve been disappointed had they let a spirited Blairgowrie anymore from the game.
Full time score: Scone 3-2 Blairgowrie
Man Of The Match for Scone: Darren Gray (sponsored by G & J Glaziers, Scone) who picks up the award for his 2 goals, Craig Mitchell again was instrumental in the middle of the park & his brother Ross also worked tirelessly for his team. After the match manager Derek Lawson (sponsored by Ronnie McNeill Painter/tiler & Lindsays Butcher) told Jaggie News “It was a very strong performance from us. I felt we dominated the game for 70 minutes but all credit to Blairgowrie who made it very difficult for us in the last 20 minutes. We were glad to get to the final whistle & take the 3 points“.
