Saturday 4th May, Consolation League Cup:
Saturday saw Scone welcome Coupar Angus to Farquharson Park for the home leg of the previous weekends tie at Foxhall Park. If a week is a long time in politics so it can also be in the football world as the visitors looked a different proposition to the previous week. This game very nearly didn’t go ahead and the kick off had to be delayed as Coupar Angus were still waiting for players to arrive, the visitors did take to the pitch with only 1 substitute on the bench and 6 changes to the team that ran out the previous weekend. Scone too made changes with manager Derek Lawson making half a dozen changes himself to the midweek game v Dundee North End. Scone were also able to welcome some of this season’s sponsors to enjoy some hospitality for the day as we looked to thank them for their support this season & we were delighted to welcome representatives from Jempson Joinery, Tay Electrics, Ian R Taylor, The Town Planner, J D Simpson & Marques of Scone. It didn’t take Scone long to get going and on 2 minutes Sean Whitworth opened the scoring as Jaggy fans wondered just how many goals they might rack up. Within 2 minutes, Scone had doubled their lead when Abi Njie scored the 1st of his afternoons goals & his first since returning to Scone. On 17 minutes, Abi Njie scored his 2nd of the day before Ross Mitchell (sponsored by Cherrybank Garage) got in on the goals on 28 minutes. Within 2 minutes, Abi Njie completed his first half hat-trick on 30 minutes before Sean Whitworth (sponsored by Stuart Bruce Decorator & Steven & Yvonne Whitworth) got his 2nd of the day to take his season’s tally to 16 goals.
Half time score: Scone 6-0 Coupar Angus
The visitors were forced into a substitution at the break with Kerr Sangster coming on for Andrew Kelly. Max Avolio had Scone’s next chance when he was unlucky to see his free kick rebound off the woodwork before Andrew Mackenzie replaced Calum Black for Scone on 52 minutes who had also picked up an unfortunate knock. Abi Njie scored again on 68 mintes before Scone made a double substitution with Kevin Sinclair & Darren Gray coming on for Ross Mitchell & Willie Laing. Things went from bad to worse for the visitors on 75 minutes when Scott Stockman had to be carried off having broken his tibia forcing the visitors to finish the game with just 10 men having already used their available substitute. All at the Club would like to wish Scott well for a speedy recovery. There was just time for 1 more goal & on 80 mintes Abi Njie scored his 5th of the afternoon to wrap up a comfortable win for the hosts.
Full time score: Scone 8-0 Copuar Angus
Man of the match for Scone – Abi Njie (sponsored by Balajee Spice) who having scored 5 of Scone’s 8 goals deserved the vote for this weeks performance. After the match manager Derek Lawson (sponsored by Ronnie McNeill Painter/tiler & Lindsays Butcher) told Jaggie News: “It was good to give some young players some more game time plus look at playing players in different roles. It was also good to rest some players for the Broughty game who are recovering from injury“. Next up for Scone is the midweek trip to East Craigie on Wednesday night to play Broughty Athletic in the quarter-final of the DJ Laing East Region Cup. Please note that this will now be at the slightly earlier time of 7pm to allow for any diminishing light.
Elsewhere in the Consolation League Cup there was home wins for Dundee North End, Newburgh & Whitburn while Arbroath Vics & Brechin Vics shared the points in a goalless draw and Lochgelly Albert drew with Kennoway Star, Tayport drew with Blairgowrie and Stoneyburn drew with West Calder.
There was only 1 game in the McBookie.com Premier League North which saw Dundee Violet beat Luncarty 3-2 which lifts them above Lochee Harp to 6th.
