Wednesday saw Scone welcome Downfield to Farquharson Park in the McBookie.com Superleague North for the second of their midweek games in these opening fixtures. Scone played well for large periods of this game & were unfortunate not to take anything from it. Manager Derek Lawson was able to welcome back Gavin Sorley in goal with Darren Gary, Darren Spence & Lee Maloney all returned to the starting line up. Both keepers were forced into saves in the opening minutes as both sides looked for the opening goal but the best of the early chances fell to Lee Maloney on 18 minutes who cut inside from the wing before hitting an absolute rocket of a shot which crashed off the Downfield cross bar. On 31 minutes Scone thought they’d scored again when an Arran McKay diving header from a Maloney corner kick sailed just wide. At this level you need to take your chances and on 36 minutes Lyle Murdoch took his to score for the visitors after capitalising on a defensive error. With just a single goal separating the teams there was still plenty to play for in the 2nd half.
Half time score: Scone 0-1 Downfield
Scone were beginning to get back to playing their passing game but were still struggling to find a way through. On 67 minutes Aaron Carlon came on for Calum Black before Samuel Sanchez came on for Lee Maloney 5 minutes later. Scone thought the equaliser had come on 74 minutes when a goal mouth scramble saw a number of players shoot before the final chance fell to Arran McKay with Darren Clarkson diving at his feet to make the save. Scone made one last change with Aiden Benvie coming on for Darren Spence, Downfield seemed quite content to see out the game now but Scone were still pushing for that elusive goal with McKay, Sanchez & Carlon all with chances and on 87 minutes Darren Gary was fouled by Connor Macleod who conceded a penalty kick. Ross Mitchell stepped up to take the kick who unfortunately put his shot over the bar perhaps with the on & off the field antics going on as he waited to take it. A disappointing end to a game that Scone were unfortunate to lose. Next up tomorrow is another tough game v last years Premier North winners Dundee North End through in Dundee kick off 2:30pm.
Full time score: Scone 0-1 Downfield
Man of the match for Scone: Gavin Sorley who kept his side in it & can’t be blamed for the goal. After the match manager Derek Lawson told Jaggies News “This was a much better performance, I felt that we desreved something from the game as we dominated the second half. I am proud of the players for their efforts in the game.“
