Saturday saw East Craigie travel to Scone for the opening game of the McBookie.com 2017/18 campaign. The last time these two sides met, Scone lost to a last minute winner and it was to be a case of history repeating itself this time round. With two central midfielders unavailable and Gary Mackie (sponsored by Aceso Clinic) still injured, manager Derek Lawson (sponsored by Colin Ogilvie Joinery) was forced to make changes from some of the pre season starting line ups. East Craigie too had made some changes over the summer with 5 trialist in their match day squad. With manger Craig Brown currently suspended, Sean Wilkie took charge of “The Shipbuilders” dug out.
The first half saw both sides have to deal with the rain and a slippery surface, Josh Gorton (available to sponsor) in goal for Scone was forced into early action with a couple of good saves to keep Scone in the game with Liam Dunn also having to deal with chances from Ross Mitchell & Charlie Fertacz (both available to sponsor) at the other end. With the score still level at half time it was probably Scone who were more grateful for the break and the chance to regroup.
The second half saw a much improved performance from Scone and in fact within a minute of the restart Ross Mitchell had a shot hit off the cross bar after a good run and curling effort. Charlie Fertacz also looked lively and indeed made the breakthrough on 59 minutes when after dribbling past two defenders, Charlie’s shot from just outside of the box saw him beat the keeper to score in the bottom right hand corner. Scone then had a chance to double their tally and give themselves some breathing space instead it was East Craigie who would score on the break and equalise via Lee Maloney. Josh Gorton then made a save from an East Craigie free kick on 68 minutes after Stephen Moon had been booked for Scone. Both sides then made substitutions with Ben Moffat coming on for Ross Mitchell with 15 minutes left. Abi Njie, Craig Mitchell and Charlie Fertacz all had efforts on target over the next minutes but as the game looked like it might end in a draw, it was East Craigie who scored in the 89th minute with a fortunate goal. The referee does not have the benefit of linesman but it appeared to both sides of the pitch that Aiden Benvie was in an offside position when he scored to make the final score 2-1 to East Craigie. As in the last time these two sides met, Scone lost to a last minute goal and can think of themselves unlucky not to get anything from the game. After the match manager Derek Lawson who was disappointed to lose the game late on, told us ” there were missed chances and good goalkeeping from both sides” a draw would certainly have been a fair result.
Man of the match for Scone: Josh Gorton (available to sponsor) who made a number of fine saves and couldn’t be blamed for either of the goals. The manager agreed with the committee decision adding “he had vital saves to make in the match and his performance overall was very good“.
