Wednesday night saw Scone play the first of their games in the Consolation League Cup. Drawn in Section 2 with Luncarty & Coupar Angus all teams will play each other home & away with the winner of the group progressing to the last 8. Manager Derek Lawson made 6 changes with Arran McKay, Calum Black, Andrew Mackenzie, Ross Mitchell, Abi Njie & Sean Whitworth all starting. The first chance of the match fell to Luncarty on 5 mins when a rash clearance by Stephen Moon was deemed to be a penalty which ex Jaggie Fraser Mills stepped up to take but was comfortably saved by Josh Gorton to keep the score level. Scone’s first chance fell to Arran McKay on 10 mins only for his effort to be blocked. The first goal came on 18 minutes when Jake Dolzanski scored for Luncarty pouncing on a short pass back to give the visitors the lead. Scone thought they had equalised on 23 minutes through Arran McKay only for the goal to be disallowed for a foul in the build up. Scone had another chance to equalise on 32 mins when an Andrew Mackenzie corner kick was narrowly missed at the back post by Sean Whitworth. Mackenzie then had a shot saved by Colin Sanchez on 44 minutes as the visitors took their lead into the break.
Half time score: Scone 0-1 Luncarty
After Abi Njie was caught offside, Scone’s first effort of the 2nd half fell to Mackenzie on 58 mins only for his effort to be turned out for a corner kick but the next goal fell to Luncarty on 66 minutes when Fraser Mills made up for his earlier penalty miss. Scone’s best period of the game followed with a hat-trick of chances the first of which fell to Ross Mitchell on 67 mins only for his effort to be cleared off the line. A minute later Abi Njie saw a fierce shot blocked when he looked certain to score before Sean Whitworth saw his effort drift wide after excellent work from Arran McKay. Both sides then made changes with Lee Maloney & Darren Gray coming on for Whitworth & Njie with Maloney unlucky to pick up a knock within 5 minutes and needing to be replaced by Aaron Carlon. Mackenzie & Gray both created chances in the last few minutes before Aaron Carlon looked liked he’d beaten the keeper in injury time only for his effort to just go wide of the post.
Full time score: Scone 0-2 Luncarty
Man of the match for Scone: Calum Black (sponsored by Tay Electrics) who had an excellent game in the middle of the park. After the match manager Derek Lawson (sponsored by Ronnie McNeill Painter/tiler & Lindsays Butcher) told Jaggie News: “We tried a different formation and gave boys some game time, I was happy with the performance and commitment from the players but we conceded 2 soft goals. We created a lot of chances but never got the luck in front of goal but at least we tried to play some football on a difficult pitch“. Next up for Scone is the aforementioned trip to Coupar Angus in the 2nd of these Section 2 games with a 2:30pm Kick off.
