Wednesday night saw Scone welcome Luncarty to Farquharson Park for the first home game in the McBookie.com Superleague North. Having got off to a difficult start on Saturday, Scone were looking to bounce back with a much improved performance which they duly delivered. Manager Derek Lawson was boosted prior to kick off by the fact that Samuel Sanchez was now available to make his debut alongside Gavin Sorley in goal who was making his first start since re-joining the Club. Luncarty started brightly creating the first chances of the game with Gavin Sorley being called into action on 10 mins to make the first of his saves. The opening goal came on 24 minutes when the visitors saw a long range pass unfortunately hit Arran McKay on the hand with the referee Gordon McCabe awarding Luncarty a penalty kick, duly taken by Chris Anton who calmly slotted the ball past Sorley to give the visitors the lead. Luncarty went on to dominate the rest of the half with Sorley called into action on a couple more occasions but the visitors were unable to extend their lead before the break.
Half time score: Scone 0-1 Luncarty
If the first half belonged to Luncarty then the 2nd belonged to Scone with whatever was said at half time having the desired effect. Scone began to find their feet & confidence and took the game to the visitors. The first chance of the 2nd half fell to Martin Strachan on 53 mins who continued to look dangerous forcing Ryan Mitchell into the save. Willie Laing ventured forward for a couple of set pieces before Aiden Benvie was unlucky to see his close range shot saved by the keeper. The equaliser came on 67 mins when an Andrew Mackenzie free kick reached Ross Mitchell who’s lobbed header dropped under the crossbar to leave the Luncarty keeper helpless. Darren Gary then hit the post on 73 minutes as both sides looked for the winner. Martin Strachan had a shot over the bar before Lee Maloney came close at the far post. The winner eventually came on 86 minutes when Samuel Sanchez found Aaron Carlon on the edge of the box who turned & twisted before firing a shot low & hard beyond Mitchell to seal the win for Scone.
Full time score: Scone 2-1 Luncarty
Man of the match for Scone: Aaron Carlon. Samuel Sanchez & Gav Sorley both did well on their debuts & Aiden Benvie & Ross Mitchell both worked hard up front but Aaron narrowly won the vote for his hold up play & his winning goal. After the match manager Derek Lawson told Jaggy News “I am delighted to get the 3 points in a very hard fought game. I was also pleased with the reaction after Saturday’s game and we showed a better mentality”. Next up for Scone is another tough test away to Broughty Athletic on Saturday. Broughty haven’t had the best of starts but Scone will be weary having met them in the quarter final of the East Region Cup last season and will be wanting to avoid a similar result. For those travelling to the game, please note that Broughty are now back at Whitton Park having now completed the renovations of their own ground.
Carnoustie extended their lead at the top with a 3-1 win away to Broughty while Dundee North End beat Forfar West End 1-0 at North End Park with Lochee Utd beating Downfield 2-1 at home. Scone move up to 6th level with Luncarty, the updated league table is available here. Off the park Scone were delighted to finally welcome the Club’s new Chaplain Gordy Mackay who we will introduce to you in a later feature but in the meantime we welcome him to Farquharson Park and hope that he enjoys his time with the Club.
