Saturday 28th October at Hermand Park, Scottish Junior Cup, Round 2:
Saturday saw Scone travel to West Lothian to take on South League opponents West Calder United. On a blustery day, both teams had a cold howling wind to contend with and it was the hosts that started the brighter of the two sides firing an early warning shot that Scone should not be complacent with 2 quick corners and Scone keeper David Winton being forced into the first save of the match. However Scone would open the scoring on 11 mins when Charlie Fertacz (sponsored by Blackadders) got on the end of a Jamie Ayton cross to beat Alistair Black in the West Calder goal. Scone probably caught West Calder by surprise scoring 3 times in the opening half hour as they appeared to score on every attack. Jamie Ayton (sponsored by Scone 2001s) made it 2-0 on 13 mins after Charlie Fertacz headed the ball on before Jamie cut in from the wing beating the defenders and keeper from a tight angle. Ross Mitchell (sponsored by Barry Grieve Plastering, Jedburgh) made it 3-0 on 26 minutes when Arran McKay headed on a Fraser Morrison free kick to give Scone a comfortable lead. As warned earlier, Scone could not afford to relax and the next 15 mins saw a West Calder fight back as they looked to gain their own foothold in the game. West Calder have only lost one League game this season and weren’t about to lie down. First Ross Morrison scored in 32 mins followed by Matthew Cooper on 38 mins before David Love completed the comeback on the stroke of half time with the pick of the bunch of West Calder’s goals.
Half time score: West Calder United 3-3 Scone Thistle
Whatever the Scone manager Derek Lawson (sponsored by Graham Milne ) said at half time, appeared to have the desired effect as the second half saw Scone pick up their attack and this time hang on to it. Jamie Ayton scored his 2nd goal of the day on 57 mins with a spectacular long range effort after good work from Kevin Sinclair. On 69 mins Ben Ayton replaced Fraser Morrison before Aaron Carlon came on for Ross Mitchell on 73 mins to ensure that both youth team players from the 2001 squad made their Scottish Junior Cup debuts. Kevin Sinclair then got on the scoring sheet as he scored with a header after Charlie Fertacz & Aaron Carlon had combined well. Charlie Fertacz then got his second of the afternoon when Jamie Ayton provided the cross for Charlie to head home before Derek Angus replaced Jamie Ayton for the last 10 minutes. This half Scone were to make no errors as the Jaggies made sure of their name going into the hat for the 3rd round draw with the games being played on Saturday 25th November. After the match the manager Derek Lawson told Jaggie News ” I’m proud of the players and the way that we battled with the squad down to the bare bones. There was some fine individual performances and I was also pleased with the contribution from Ben & Aaron from the 2001’s. We are all excited to see who we now get in the next round“.
Full time score: West Calder United 3-6 Scone Thistle
Man of the match for Scone: Jamie Ayton not only for his two goals but for his hard work all round, he also probably just shaded the battle of the cart wheels too (pictures to follow).
