Scone made it a winning start to the new McBookie.com North Division season with a hard working victory over East Craigie thanks to a solid defensive display and a single goal from Sean Whitworth.
East Craigie had the first chance of the game after 4 minutes when McDonald collected a loose ball in midfield and tested Winton from distance, however it was an easy catch for the Scone keeper.
Scone responded and Sean Fergus saw a free kick go just off target as the play switched from end to end.
East Craigie were next to threaten and after a Bowie cross from the left fizzed across the Scone box without any away striker getting on the end of it, Winton had to look sharp to block a Mann close range effort.
Good play from the Scone front trio of Whitworth, trialist Abi Njie and Mills saw the latter break through on the East Craigie goal, only for his effort from the edge of the box to go over the bar.
McLeish was next to test Winton with a weak effort from outside the area that was easily dealt with before Gray pulled a shot wide of target after a well worked free kick from the visitors.
However for all East Craigie’s efforts the old adage of it coming back to haunt you when you don’t take your chances was certainly the case in this match.
The visitors were given due warning when Scone almost took the lead after great play between Sinclair and Njie on the left. When Sinclair crossed into the centre it was inches beyond Mills but picked up at the back post on the goal line by Whitworth, he cut the ball into the middle where White made a desperate block to stop Mills knocking the ball into the back of the net.
East Craigie failed to pay attention to this warning though and Whitworth was able to take advantage of a defensive blunder by McDonald to put the home side ahead just before the interval.
A long ball forward from Moon looked pretty harmless as it went over the head of Whitworth, however the Scone player put McDonald under pressure to pass the ball back to Logie in the East Craigie goal and when he attempted to head the ball back his weak header was picked up by Whitworth to roll the ball home from the edge of the box.
The second half saw McLeish and Mann, twice, have efforts off target before Mitchell produced a great save from Logie after getting on the end of a good cross from Whitworth.
East Craigie almost levelled the game after 74 minutes when a cross from the right was allowed to reach Maloney at the back post. His shot from point blank range was brilliantly blocked by Winton and the loose ball thumped clear by Macdonald before the ball spun across the goal line despite the claims by the visiting players that the ball had indeed crossed the line.
Scone were beginning to have the better of the play and could have secured a second goal with time running out.
First good play from Macdonald and Mitchell released Moffat on the right wing and his effort from the edge of the box was well held by Logie, then Moffat did well to pick up the ball on the right wing before cutting infield where his cross into the centre was collected by Njie, however his effort flew just past the left hand upright.
With the match deep into injury time, East Craigie had one final chance with a long ball forward to Maloney who appeared to be in an offside position, however with the heavy rain and no assistants making it difficult for the referee to judge, play was allowed to continue and thankfully for Scone Winton was to produce a great save to block Maloney’s effort from the edge of the box.
The full time whistle went moments later and Scone celebrating kick off season 2016/17 with all three points after a difficult game.
