Saturday saw Scone travel to Montrose to play the third of their six pre season friendlies against Montrose Roselea JFC. “The Lea” have just been promoted to the North Superleague after the switch to the North Region last season and was to be The Jaggies toughest test yet as they looked to build on the back of their opening two wins.
With the Mitchell brothers missing, coach Mark Reid had a squad of 17 players available including Derek Angus and Scott Lafferty who were playing as trialist.
Although not particularly wet there was a strong breeze and you understand why there’s a sign in the pavilion saying “welcome to the wind”. The Lea started the stronger with some good passing and it was Jaggies keeper David Winton who was forced into the first save of the match on 4 minutes. With the wind behind them, Montrose had the momentum in the early exchanges and after a foul by Willie Laing just outside the box on 18 minutes, it was Lloyd Hester who opened the scoring when his free kick cleared the wall to make it 1-0. Scone fought back with a couple of chances themselves, Arran McKay came close with a headed effort from a Martin Strachan corner on 28 minutes before Abi Njie headed just wide from a Kevin Sinclair corner a couple of minutes later. Scone would have the ball in the back of the net on 41 minutes after Abi Njie got on the end of a Martin Strachan free kick but the goal was ruled out for being offside by referee David Maclennan. The Lea would have a further chance themselves when they won a free kick just before half time but at the break the score remained 1-0.
During the interval, coach Mark Reid made three changes with goalkeeper Josh Gorton coming on for David Winton, Lewis Avolio for Stephen Moon and Derek Angus replacing Gary Mackie. Scone started the second half much brighter and almost immediately scored from a Sean Whitworth free kick on the very edge of the box only for the keeper to turn it around the post. However Scone did equalise just a few minutes later when Abi Njie scored his fourth goal of the pre season with a well placed penalty to make it 1-1 on 49 minutes. Montrose then won what appeared to be a “soft” free kick 5 minutes later but was a well worked move as this time, instead of taking a shot the kick was taken short and to the left before being crossed into the box. When the shot on goal came, Sean Whitworth was unlucky to see the ball deflect off him to make the score 2-1. Never one to let a setback put him off, Sean “Yeti” Whitworth would make amends on 61 minutes when after a Martin Strachan corner, Captain Willie Laing would head across goal for Sean Whitworth to get the final touch and make it 2-2. Scott Lafferty then came on for Ben Moffat before Montrose made 7 changes themselves in a scene reminiscent of an international friendly (all substitutions listed with the full match stats under the match day/ fixtures & results tab). Scone would make a couple more changes themselves on 72 minutes with Matthew Muir and Jamie Ayton coming on for Sean Whitworth and Abi Njie. The Jaggies worked hard and deserved something from the game as they continue their build up to the start of the season.
Many thanks to Montrose Roselea for their hospitality and in particular the Golf Inn Bar and best wishes for the season ahead.
Next up for Montrose are Jeanfield who travel up on Wednesday with Scone travelling to Dundee on Tuesday night to play Morgan AFC. Manager Derek Lawson (sponsored by Colin Ogilvie Joinery) is back from his break later this week, the squad will also be training on Thursday before Saturday’s game v Dunipace JFC.
