Saturday saw Scone travel to Westfied Park, Denny to play Dunipace JFC in the 5th of their pre season friendlies. As urged to in the match day preview, the Jaggies certainly “picked up The Pace” with a convincing 4-1 win against a side who has won & drawn their opening two friendlies. With Charlie Fertacz, Matthew Muir & Gary Mackie all missing, manger Derek Lawson (away sponsor Graham Milne) had a squad of 18 including 3 trialist that would all make an appearance.
What had started as a sunny day soon deteriorated into a very wet afternoon as both sides battled with the conditions. It wouldn’t take long for the Jaggies to settle down and on 6 minutes, Martin Strachan (available to sponsor) scored the first of his three goals. Martin’s corner kick was deemed as a shot on target and despite the deflection off the Dunipace defence the referee Eddie Ferguson awarded the goal to Strachan. Kevin Sinclair and Abi Njie both then had shots on target but it was “The Pace” who scored next on 39 mins when Scone failed to clear a corner and Craig Hughes was able to equalise. Jamie Ayton then came close after a good run and cross from Fraser MacDonald only for Sean Robertson to dive and save to keep the scoreline 1-1 at the break.
The second half started with goalkeeper Michael Watson replacing Sean in the Dunipace goal before Callum Stevenson & Dominic McGrandles replaced David Grant and Sean McLaughlin on 48 minutes for Dunipace. As the game reached the hour mark, Dunipace were to be caught short on 62 minutes when Abi Njie leapt on to a loose pass and sprinted into the penalty box, he then turned and passed the ball back to Martin Strachan who rifled a shot into the top corner from outside of the penalty box to make it 2-1. Scone then made two changes themsleves with Ross Mitchell and Jamie Ayton making way for Ben Moffat and Trialist coming on. With 15 minutes to go, Arran McKay came on for Craig Mitchell before Derek Angus and Scott Lafferty came on for Abi Njie and Fraser MacDonald. Scone looked lively and after a great diagonal ball from Stephen Moon, Scott Lafferty teed up substitute trialist to make it 3-1 on 79 minutes. Within a minute Martin Strachan completed his hat-trick and his 4th pre season goal. Lewis Avolio then replaced Stephen Moon as Scone completed a convincing win.
After the match, Derek Lawson told Jaggies News “it was a good performance, the best of all the pre season games so far. It was also some much needed minutes and game time for the players”. Next up for Scone is the last friendly of pre season and see The Jaggies return to Farquharson Park.
