Tuesday saw Scone welcome a Berwick Rangers Development squad to Farquharson Park for the last of Scone’s pre season friendlies. This was the only home fixture of pre season and with a squad of 17 available, Manager Derek Lawson (sponsored by Colin Ogilvie Joinery) was able to have one last look at some players before the start of the season. Gary Mackie (sponsored by Aces Clinic) was recovering from a knock and sat out the match along with Kevin Sinclair (available to sponsor) who was also rested.
The first half, Scone’s goalkeeper David Winton made a couple of early saves with Ben Moffat, Sean Whitworth & Abi Njie all having chances at the other end. Berwick were proving to be solid opponents and with the score remaining 0-0 at the break, both sides took a welcome break from the rain. Berwick would make their only 2 substitutions of the match with Lewis McKay and Macaulay Jarrett coming on for Callum Heath and Stuart Allan. Scone themselves replaced Abi Njie with Charlie Fertacz during the break.
The second half, saw some frustration creep in to the game and the referee George Anderson issued 3 cautions as he tried to keep control of the game. Ross Mitchell & Charlie Fertacz both had chances early in the second half before Arran McKay came on for Ben Moffat just after the hour mark. On 66 minutes Jamie Ayton had the best chance of the game when he thumped the ball off the cross bar with a long range effort which would’ve been an early contender for goal of the season had it gone in. Matty Muir & Scott Lafferty came on for Sean Whitworth & Jamie Ayton on 70 mins with Lewis Avolio replacing Ross Mitchell for the last 10 minutes. Derek Lawson will be happy to have only lost one of the six friendlies overall and was particularly happy with the defending in the second half in what was a physical game.
Many thanks to the Wheel Inn for their hospitality for both teams after the match. Scone will now turn their attention to the opening two league games both at home and a 2:30pm kick off against East Craigie & Brechin Vics. You will also be able to purchase at the games a season ticket for the McBookies.com home league games at Farquharson Park which will also get you 10% off your food bill at the Wheel Inn.
