Saturday saw Brechin Vics come to Scone for the second McBookie.com league game of the season. Scone manager Derek Lawson (sponsored by Colin Ogilvie Joinery) was able to welcome back Martin Strachan (available to sponsor) and David Winton (sponsored by the Baker Family) but without Stephen Moon and Ben Moffat called up 3 youth team players from the Scone 2001s to the Juniors squad. Stevie Taylor’s 2001 squad will be playing at Farquharson Park this season with some of the players training with the senior squad when possible, as both teams within the Community Club look to provide a pathway across all levels of the game. We thank Stevie for his continued support and wish the 2001 team the best of luck for the forthcoming season. Joining the matchday squad from the 2001 team was Ben Ayton, Aaron Carlon & Darren Spence along with James Kinnear and Derek Angus who were playing as trialist.
The game started with both sides looking to put last weeks disappointment behind them but in the 12th minute, Ross Mitchell who had struggled to shrug off an earlier injury was substituted for Ben Ayton. A minute later Sean Whitworth (sponsored by Steven & Yvonne Whitworth) opened the scoring after good work from Charlie Fertacz (sponsored by Blackadders) who was able to beat Hearn and cross to the far post where Sean was waiting to slot the ball home. The Vics did their best to get back into the game with Winton being forced to make a save on 21mins and Craig Mitchell hitting the bar on 30 minutes but at the break the score remained 1-0 to Scone.
The second half started with the Vics substituting Brodey Craigie for Liam Bailey but it was Scone who would have the next chance. With Charlie Fertacz again providing the decisive pass, Aaron Carlon who had got in front of his marker, was unfortunate to see his shot saved by the Vics keeper Davidson. Charlie too then had an effort saved before Winton was again called into action at the other end. Brechin then made another two substitutions with Sam Hayes and Bailey Dawson coming on for Blair Stephen and Kieran MacGregor. As Scone pushed for a second both Ben Ayton & Aaron Carlon had shots on target and looked to be adapting well to the juniors game. In the 78th minute, Lewis Avolio came on for Derek Angus and as the game entered the last 10 minutes the Jags put the game to bed. Craig Mitchell (sponsored by Taylors Hair & Beauty Salon) made it 2-0 on 84 mins when Ben Ayton crossed the ball into his path after a good run down the left-wing. Darren Spense then came on for Aaron Carlon but it was Charlie Fertacz who topped off a good performance with a well taken goal in the 90th minute with a Craig Mitchell assist.
Man of the match for Scone: Ben Ayton who topped off a great week after impressing a few with his midweek performance for the 2001 team. After the game the manager said of the game “I was glad to keep a clean sheet and give the young lads a chance with so many players unavailable“.
