Report

Saturday 23rd September at Laing Park, GA Engineering Cup:

Saturday saw Scone travel to Angus for the first round tie against Carnoustie Panmure. Manager Derek Lawson (sponsored by Graham Milne) for the first time this season had all his squad available and it was the hosts this week who were having to deal with injuries & suspensions. Despite this “The Gowfers” started brightly with Pat Martin hitting the woodwork for Carnoustie in the opening exchanges. On 18 minutes, as the ball was floated forward from a Carnoustie free kick, Craig Mitchell was judged to have fouled Conway and Sam Simpson scored from the penalty spot to give the hosts the lead. Despite this, Scone fought to get back into the match with Jamie Ayton (sponsored by Scone 2001s) catching the eye and Kevin Sinclair hitting the bar from a Scone free kick and ‘The Jaggies‘ were maybe unfortunate to go into the break a goal down.

Half time score: Carnoustie Panmure 1-0 Scone Thistle.

The second half saw Scone continue to test Carnoustie but it was “The Gowfers” who would score next on 56 mins when Ryan Dignan scored from a header to make it 2-0. Carnoustie also made a substitution with Roberts coming on for Mair. Scone continued to work hard with Ben Moffat coming on for Jamie Ayton and on 82 minutes Fraser Morrison (available to sponsor), pulled a goal back to keep the Jaggies in the game. Unfortunately for Scone, as they battled to get something out of the game it would be Carnoustie that would make sure they were in the draw for the next round when Ryan Dignan scored his second goal of the afternoon on 90 minutes.

Full time score: Carnoustie Panmure 3-1 Scone Thistle.

After the match, manager Derek Lawson told Jaggies News “I am disappointed we didn’t win the game with the amount of chances that we had but I’m very happy with the performance, the hunger & the desire of the players. We will take plenty of positives from the game and I wish Carnoustie all the best for the rest of the season and in the next round of the GA Engineering Cup“. Next up for Scone is a home League game on Saturday v Arbroath Vics with a 2:30pm kick off.

Man of the match for Scone: Ross Mitchell (pictured) who is available to sponsor for the season either home or away. Any enquiries to sponsor Ross or any of the players/staff can be directed to commercial@sconethistlefc.org.
